Werratal
Between the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön Mountains, the Werra meanders through magnificent green river meadows, rugged cliffs and wildly romantic riverbank landscapes. You can experience this natural wonder from a very special perspective by canoe. But the Werratal is also an absolute top address for cyclists. The Werratal cycle path is particularly suitable for multi-day tours with detours to the cultural city of Meiningen or the half-timbered town of Schmalkalden. One of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany is the Werra-Burgen-Steig (Werra Castle Trail), which leads, for example, via Herrenbreitungen Castle or Maienluft Castle in Wasungen.

Perhaps the most spectacular overnight accommodation in the Prachtregion awaits those seeking peace and quiet in the town of Breitungen. There is a choice of tastefully furnished castle rooms, rustic shepherd’s caravans, wooden cuddly nests and comfortable holiday homes by the lakeside bath. One of the absolute insider tips is a hike around the Breitungen Lakes, a very special natural idyll. The most popular destinations in the Werra village include Breitungen Castle with its Romanesque basilica and the Activity Museum, as well as the lido at the Kiessee lake with its camping site and mini-golf course.

The historic half-timbered town of Wasungen is not only known throughout Germany for its street carnival with more than 500 years of tradition. There is also a special treasure to be explored in the town in the Werra Valley. All year round, the forest botanical garden takes you on a journey around the globe – a trip between black spruces from Alaska, Japanese larches, or oaks from the Caucasus. The town’s landmark is the ruins of the medieval castle Burg Maienluft – a popular tourist destination.
