Grabfeld
The village of Bauerbach in the municipality of Grabfeld has a real classic to offer. Here, a few kilometres from Meiningen, the young Friedrich Schiller found asylum for a few months in 1782 and 1783, incognito as “Dr. Ritter”. The von Wolzogen family home, where Schiller wrote his “Luise Millerin” and the drama “Don Karlos”, is now a literary museum – a branch of the Weimar Classic Foundation. In the summer months, plays by Friedrich Schiller are performed in the idyllic natural theatre of the village – a truly unique spectacle without equal.

Another excursion destination is the ruins of Henneburg Castle, the former ancestral residence of the Counts of Henneberg. In the small village of Berkach there is an ensemble of synagogue, school, mikvah and cemetery, a rare testimony to Jewish life in the countryside. The moated castle of Schwickershausen and Bibra Castle are always worth a visit.
